WMV

WMV: Windows Media Video. Denotes a proprietary Codec from Microsoft for compressing audio and video data. Depending on the compression rate, the format offers transmission rates of 96 kbit/s (176 x 144 pixel – QCIF) up to 135 Mbit/s (1.920 x 1.080 pixels for 1080p). Thanks to this variability, in the form of several different individual codecs, WMV is suitable both for Internet streams and for film recordings in high definition.

By the way, an enhanced version of WMV comes in the form of VC-1 (besides MPEG-4/AVC and MPEG-2) on Blu-ray discs to use. To prevent unauthorized duplication, this codec supports digital rights management DRM, which in principle only allows licensed owners to use the data.
