timbre matching

timbre matching: Designates a feature of the THX chip in THX-licensed receivers. To reduce sound differences between front and surround channels, an equalizing curve is inserted into the data stream of the surround signal. The reason for this is that sounds coming from behind or above are perceived differently by the human ear than sounds coming from the front. A special equalization curve compensates for this phenomenon and creates a harmonious sound image from front to back.
