S-VHS: Super VHS. Denotes the extension of the VHS standard (see VHS) by better (more expensive) Band, improved read/write heads and higher FM-Hub (see FM) a horizontal Resolution reached by about 400 lines. In the VHS system, as in the extended S-VHS version, the color and black values of the picture are saved separately.
In contrast to VHS recorders, S-VHS recorders can separate these Y/C signals can also be received and output separately. This achieves an additional improvement in recording quality. Although S-VHS recorders can also record and play back VHS, VHS recorders (apart from a few exceptions) cannot play back S-VHS recordings.
