LFE

LFE: Low Frequency Effects. Denotes a special Channel – the so-called 0.1 channel – in the digital sound format of cinema films, which is limited to frequencies between 20 Hz and 100 Hz.

Important difference to home cinema: In the cinema, this channel is only used for “dramatic” special effects – i.e. to boost the bass – the entire bass spectrum is also transmitted by the “normal” front speakers. In the home cinema system, the entire bass below an adjustable threshold of, for example, 80 Hz (THX systems) is extracted from the other loudspeakers and taken over by the subwoofers.
