VC-1: Denotes one Codec for video compression, which is used for high-resolution material. Especially with the DVD-Successor formats Blu-Ray-Disc (see Blu-Ray) and HD-DVD (see HD DVD). Originally developed as Windows Media 9, the codec is now known as SMPTE 421M (see SMPTE) standardized. It is in competition with MPEG-4 (see MPEG-4) and still with the somewhat outdated one MPEG-2 (see MPEG-2).
