Reflection: If sound hits a boundary surface, it is (partially) thrown back into the room. If this surface is smooth and hard, the reflection is strongest and the degree of absorption is close to zero.
Open-pored, soft material has a much higher degree of absorption (see absorption) and therefore reflects much less. The laws of geometry apply to reflections, i.e. the angles of incidence and reflection are the same.
