monopole speaker

monopole speaker: Most loudspeakers only emit sound forwards. That is why they are also referred to as direct radiator or – in THX jargon – as a monopoly.

The sound should reach the listener's ear as directly as possible. These boxes are the measure of all things, especially for stereo reproduction. Because of the high demands on dynamics and maximum level, they are also used as rear speakers in digital surround.
