distortion factor

distortion factor: The distortion factor indicates by what percentage the incoming signals (see Signal) can be distorted by the electronics of the amplifier. The distortion factor should therefore be as small as possible.

Typical values are 0.05% to 1%. However, distortion factors can also mean multiples of the original signal. We perceive even multiples of the original signal (2, 4, 6...) as disturbing, odd multiples (3, 5, 7...) as harmonious. Transistors generate increased inharmonic distortions, roar on the other hand, amplifies harmonics. Distortions in the bass are not as annoying as distortions in the mids, i.e. the voice range.
