intermodulation

intermodulation: In speaker technology, intermodulation is the typical distortion that becomes immediately audible when the speaker is overloaded. In multipath systems, intermodulation can only be used in frequency ranges (see frequency range) become effective with the same Chassis (see chassis) are radiated.

Since distortions can be heard most clearly in the 500 Hz...4 kHz range and intermodulation is triggered most strongly by the large membrane deflection of low frequencies, 3-way systems in which bass (frequencies <100 Hz) and mids (frequencies 500 Hz ...4 kHz) are radiated on separate chassis, clearly superior to 1-way and 2-way constructions.
