SMPTE

SMPTE: The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers develops international norms and standards in the field of professional film and especially video technology. The organization, which was founded in 1916 and whose members include almost all well-known manufacturers in the field of video technology, is based in White Plains in the state of New York, USA. In most cases, however, the standards are not developed by the SMPTE itself, but are merely documented in the sense of a forum and adopted as a norm.

The SMPTE plays mainly in defining the HDTV-Standards (see HDTV), Blu-Ray-Disc (see Blu-Ray) and HD-DVD (see HD video) played an important role, so in 2006 the Codec VC-1 (formerly known as Windows Media 9) as SMPTE 421M. VC-1 is next to MPEG-4 (see MPEG-4) and MPEG-2 (see MPEG-2) one of the codecs used in the DVD-Successors Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are used.
