OLED

OLED: Organic Light Emitting Diode (in German: organic display). Denotes the further development of the still prevalent liquid crystal screens (LCD). The organic displays are considered to be extremely bright and high-contrast. They owe their name to the organic semiconductors used.

Because the LEDs are self-illuminating, they do not need any backlighting, unlike the LCD. It would also be conceivable to use it for generous room lighting and, due to the materials that can be used, as a flexible display and e-paper. At the end of January 2009, Sony launched the XEL-1, an 11-inch OLED TV for around EUR 4.300 (as of the end of January) on the German market!
