MPEG 4: Designates an MPEG standard (ISO/IEC-14496) which, among other things, describes a method for video and audio compression. Originally, the goal of MPEG 4 was systems with few resources or narrow bandwidths - e.g. B. mobile phones - to support with relatively small loss of quality. MPEG 4 is most important Codec for HDTV (see HDTV) and for the new, as a successor to the DVD (see DVD) intended HD storage media, Blu-Ray.
