DALI LECTOR 1

DALI LECTOR 1

On the occasion of the award for "Loudspeaker of the Year 2008" by a readers' choice HiFi-Online.net I subjected the DALI LEKTOR 1 to a test, which was intended to show whether the smallest model in the LEKTOR series lived up to the high expectations.

First, however, I would like to introduce you to the exciting world of naming for Loudspeakers kidnap While the Danish loudspeaker manufacturer DALI still named its series IKON, HELICON and MENTOR the Greek way, the LEKTOR series took a different direction. It should serve as an introduction to the world of the most neutral sound conversion possible. Underlined by the character of the external appearance of DALI ("Nothing added, nothing subtracted") should also
with the LEKTOR, the "Latin reader", to make it clear that nothing was added to the sound, nor was anything taken away.

Admittedly, on the day of delivery - note "only" by DHL - I was a little surprised at first. The first thought that came to my mind when the package was handed to me was: Where did the person dressed nicely in yellow leave the second package? Although I was aware that the LEKTOR 1 is a small compact loudspeaker, I was surprised that they both fit together in just one box.

Technology

But let's get down to the essentials, namely the LEKTOR 1 itself. Visually, it scores at the highest level. The body, designed in modern walnut (alternatively also available in black ash), together with the satin-matt front, is an absolute eye-catcher. On the back of the housing there is a gold-plated single wiring terminal for bare cable ends and 4mm Bananas. The integrated wall bracket for the LEKTOR 1 is located directly above the label with the model designation and serial number, which can therefore be used as a wall, shelf or Center Speaker can function. A 180° turn shows the front of the "Loudspeaker of the Year". There are two 2,7 cm wide bass reflex ports in the middle area. Directly above these two ports is the Tweeter installed, one
28 mm high-performance fabric dome with aluminum front as "acoustic lens" to achieve the wide and even dispersion. This tweeter allows the LEKTOR 1 to
Reproduction of frequencies up to 27 kHz. Among the bass reflex ports we find the four-inch deep/midrange. This is made from extremely light and low-loss paper cones and is driven by semi-shielded double magnets. And since everyone should be familiar with the laws of physics, we can also state at this point that smaller ones Chassis vibrate faster, allowing for more accurate playback.SOUND

If I look at the last few years in things Loudspeakers review, I have to admit that during this time I didn't Loudspeakers with such a perfect price/performance ratio as the LEKTOR 1, "got under your ears"! The €338 that the pair costs is by no means a bad investment for people who value the best sound, the finest optics and versatile placement options.

Are the "two cuties" first of all to the final stage connected and flooded with signals you can almost fall off your chair! The LEKTOR 1 bombards its listeners with one dynamics, which is a real miracle for this size. At this point is also the correspondingly high sensitivity of 84 dB noted. The LEKTOR 1 was tested with a variety of music genres. However, I was able to gather the best listening impressions from songs by Jack Johnson, Vangelis (El Greco, Invisible Connections, ...) or Pat Metheny. As a result, I can say that the LEKTOR 1 not only impresses with its looks, but also, among other things

scores with its high-frequency reproduction. This is based on two pure silver loudspeaker cables (including the Platin-Line from WSS) and two copper cables (although the cable manufacturers no longer produce this very often due to the limited treble presence).

But not only the treble is convincing in DALI's "all-round carefree package", because the LEKTOR 1 plays every piece with a spatial fullness that is worthy of all honor. The midrange is very balanced and confident. I do remember a test report on the LEKTOR 6 in a larger trade magazine, where the authors were very surprised when DALI's CEO Lars Worre mentioned that linearity only plays a subordinate role with DALI and errors in the frequency response are to be accepted. I will address this briefly because I would like to express that the LEKTOR 1 - should it have been subjected to the same principle - does not show this at all, perhaps even playing more harmoniously than some compact loudspeakers that are higher in price.

Also worth mentioning is the clarity with which the LEKTOR 1 reproduces every piece of music. I haven't had anything like this with anyone else Loudspeakers belongs to the price and, above all, size class. You can also bring the technology behind MDF boards into play

speak without mincing words of a harmonious and holistic interaction of the drivers. Anyone who has heard or will hear the LEKTOR 1 can confirm this.

But unfortunately the LEKTOR 1 also has a small negative point, which can be remedied with a small budget increase. We're talking about bass reproduction. Of course you have to consider that you are dealing with a four inch woofer/midrange driver in a compact loudspeaker, but I often lacked the depth. Solution to the problem would be an additional active Subwoofer, such as the LEKTOR Sub. If you looped this approx. 30 x 30 cm square "box" into the chain with 0 dB, it would buffer the frequency drop of the LEKTOR 1 at 51 Hz and continue down to 31 Hz.

Conclusion

The feather-light LEKTOR 1 impresses with its looks, its treble and midrange and, above all, with its credible and natural tones. With it, the Scandinavian manufacturer DALI has created an entry-level model in the world of the most neutral sound possible, which is affordable and more than acceptable. Thanks to their versatile placement options (compact speakers, center, wall or Bookshelf speakers) it can find a place in every household that values optimal music reproduction. It has a filigree nature and rightly bears the title "Loudspeaker of the Year 2008" - the votes of 60.000 readers just can't lie!
